Black Panther (All-New, All Different Marvel)
Tue 22 Sep 2015 - 20:48
The New York Times is reporting that Marvel is launching a new Black Panther series in 2016 written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and illustrated by Brian Stelfreeze. Their year-long storyline is titled "A Nation Under Our Feet,"and is reportedly inspired by Steven Hahn's book of the same name.
“It’s going to be a story that repositions the Black Panther in the minds of readers,” said Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso “It really moves him forward.”
In the story-arc, T'Challa will reportedly come into conflict with a superhuman terrorist group called the People that incites a violent uprising in Wakanda.
Coates is a journalist for The Atlantic, and has written two non-fiction books based on his life. The author is well-known as a superhero comic book reader, and said that he was invited to write Black Panther after he interviewed Marvel editor Sana Amanat. Although he's best known for writing mainstream non-fiction, Coates said his comic book debut won't be too different from the journalistic work he does.
"I don’t experience the stuff I write about as weighty,” said Coates. “I feel a strong need to express something. The writing usually lifts the weight. I expect to be doing the same thing for Marvel.”

More has been learned about the upcoming Black Panther ongoing series by Ta-Nehesi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze. As seen in this cover to May's Black Panther #2 by Stelfreeze, Wakanda will be in the midst of a full scale revolt by its citizens against T'Challa and the ruling elite. And the revolt is led by some of T'Challa's most trusted allies.
"The darkest chapter of the Black Panther mythos continues as Wakanda crumbles from within. Enter: The Midnight Angels!"reads the second issue's description. "Two mysterious women leading the citizen revolt against the current regime of Wakanda, challenging not only T’Challa’s politics but also his resolve. But will their rage provide more for the people than the royal family has thus far? Written by MacArthur Genius and National Book Award winner TA-NEHISI COATES (Between the World and Me) and illustrated by living legend BRIAN STELFREEZE!"
The Midnight Angels, also known as the Dora Milaje, were established in previous issues to be the personal bodyguards of the Black Panther. They are a elite subdivision of the Dora Milaje, used akin to the U.S. Navy Seals for special missions.
