It all looks rather dark. And appears to have the Doctor Doom Iron Man amongst the Vision, Sam Wilson Captain America, Jane Thor, Russian Wasp and… some fellow with a gun. if I could see the image I might be able to tell you. The bearded one has let me down…

AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER from FOOM

When Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, and U.S.Avengers combine into a single, unified weekly title next year for "Avengers: No Surrender,"the team's line-up will undergo some big changes again - starting with the end of Uncanny Avengers and U.S.Avengers, and the incorporation of some those teams' members into the core Avengers roster. The new details were revealed in Marvel's FOOM, a promotional magazine that arrived in Direct Market comic book stores Tuesday and will be available to readers beginning Wednesday.

"Avengers: No Surrender"co-writer Mark Waid described the series as "half celebration, half wake"for the Avengers, while Jim Zub said the story will be the "final hurrah"of the current era of the team.

As for what's troubling the team, the individual members are experiencing their own issues that they'll deal with throughout the series. For Beast, this means trying to reconnect with his past - specifically his time on the Avengers and his friendship with Wonder Man - and focusing on his scientific prowess rather than his beastly strength. He'll work with Wasp to discover some new ideas that, in Waid's words, will be "essential to the team's survival."


For Beast's fellow X-Man-turned-Avenger Rogue, "No Surrender"is about overcoming new challenges - including one that will, according to Zub, "take something special from her."

Then there's Quicksilver, who Zub said is "in a dark place"in the story, as well as Vision, whose actions as the team's communications hub may draw unsavory attention from "dark forces,"according to the series' third co-writer, Al Ewing.

Finally - and perhaps most surprisingly - there's Living Lightning (now just going by 'Lightning'), who will enter the story with a new supporting cast of his own. "He hasn't been just sitting in a green room waiting to get a call all this time,"explained Ewing. "He's been off having exciting adventures."

The full line-up of the "No Surrender"Avengers has not yet been revealed, but it will also include at least two more founding Avengers, as well as several new characters, and some unnamed characters Ewing described as "cinematic favorites."

Additionally, Jarvis, the longtime butler of the Avengers, will play a key role in the story, as will Voyager, a new character whose identity Marvel has promised will be revealed on September 29.

"Avengers: No Surrender"kicks off in Avengers #675 in January.

“Avengers: No Surrender” kicks off in January’s Avengers #675, written by Mark Waid, Al Ewing and Jim Zub, with art by Pepe Larraz. The weekly storyline will last for three months, with the writing team working together throughout while artist Kim Jacinto illustrates the second month’s chapter, and Paco Medina takes on the third month’s.
“The Earth has been stolen! That’s the kickoff to the wildest Avengers epic ever put to paper, a widescreen adventure with a massive cast and an unlimited budget,” SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said in a statement. “Avengers past and present will be called upon to cope with a threat spanning out of the pages of MARVEL LEGACY #1. And like that oversized special, there’s a huge character return or two along the way that fans have been asking for—and one that they didn’t even know they wanted!”

Ominously billed as “The Beginning of the End,” the “No Surrender” storyline is said to feature of such classic Avengers characters as loyal longtime butler Edwin Jarvis and the Living Lightning, who’s now apparently referred to simply as Lightning. The latter, introduced in 1990 in Avengers West Coast #63, is depicted on the promotional artwork for “No Surrender,” alongside Rogue, Quicksilver, Thor, The Vision and what looks to be Beast.

Marvel Comics’ Legacy initiative kicked off Sept. 27 with Marvel Legacy #1, a 50-page one-shot from writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic that teased “startling origin of the Marvel Universe” and underscore how “it’s all connected.”

Brevoort: I don’t want to reveal too much, but I’ll tell you that in the first issue, the inciting event is that the Earth has been stolen. Everyone wakes up on Monday morning and the Earth is not where it’s supposed to be – it’s been purloined and taken elsewhere. So the fate of all humanity, and of the stolen planet, rests in the hands of the Avengers.

I can also tell you there are two contentious groups of villains in Avengers: No Surrender that are rampaging across the surface of the Earth. One of those is the Black Order, Thanos’ minions who were introduced in Infinity, and the other is a brand new incarnation of the Lethal Legion made up of some new villains and a few old familiar faces who have been somewhat overhauled.

These two forces are on the Earth doing something for some reason, and getting to the bottom of all this is one of the Avengers’ main goals at the outset of the story.

Nrama: I want to ask you about Voyager. I’m not naïve enough to think you’re going to spoil everything about her and her identity right now, so what can you tell us about who she is and her role in Avengers: No Surrender?

Brevoort: I can tell you she’s the most important character in the Marvel Universe that you don’t remember – but you will. And you’ll remember her by the time Avengers #676 comes out, the second part of No Surrender.

There’s a scene in there that lays out quite concretely exactly who she is. Her identity will be revealed.

I will tell you – because it fills me with immeasurable glee – that her secret identity, her real name, is Valerie Vector. Take that as you will – people can go to their Marvel Handbooks to see if they can suss out any clues about her identity.

There are clues in Marvel Legacy #1. There are clues in the promo image that Alex Ross painted that’s on the back of the lenticular variant and will be seen on a lot of books moving forward, where she’s included with the founding Avengers on their statue.
