The series, starting in January 2011, is written by Jonathan Maberry (DoomWar) and illustrated by a rotating team including Sergio Cariello (Dynamite’s The Lone Ranger), Tom Sciola (Godland), Phil Winslade (Howard the Duck) and Kyle Hotz (Annihilation: Conquest – Wraith). It starts in World War II with something called the “Lazarus Plague,” and ends up in the present day, detailing how Hydra has remained a uniquely persistent threat — y'know, the kind where two heads grow back if one is cut off — throughout the decades.

Debuting in January 2011, new ongoing series Captain America: The Fighting Avenger follows in the vein of Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee’s Thor: The Mighty Avenger by providing a continuity-free look at one of Marvel’s most recognizable characters, starting from the beginning. Clevinger is again paired with his World War Hulks: Captain America vs. Wolverine art team — the Japanese duo Gurihiru, best known for their Power Pack work.

Brevoort: It's Captain America's 70th Anniversary this March, and that's why we're doing these five one-shots. We gave some thought to the fact that there's going to be a film, of course, but really, the purpose of doing these books was to take a snapshot of where Captain America is at after 70 years of publishing.
Not every one of those books is set contemporaneously. "Captain America And The First 13"is set in the 1940s during World War II. Peggy Carter's story has never fully been told. We've done a couple of three-panel flashbacks here and there, and there was one little 12-page story in the '60s that Stan and John Romita, Sr. did, but we've never gotten to see Cap and Peggy interact in a meaningful way. So this nice Kathryn Immonen one-shot will delve into their relationship amidst the War. And it also kind of drops a little seed for a moment that'll happen in "Cap"in a couple of months.
We're doing the "Captain America and the Falcon"because Sam's been a regular presence in the book for so long - particularly since Bucky's taken over the role - and by virtue of the fact that the main series is called "Captain America"rather than "Captain America And The Falcon"like it was in the '70s, he tends to not get as much of the spotlight as we might like. So here's a story that'll focus on Sam Wilson and what he's about and his background. It'll flesh him out a bit more for people who aren't as familiar as guys who remember "Captain America And The Falcon"from the '70s...guys like me. [Laughter]
We're doing a "Captain America and Crossbones"story, which is a fun chance to take a character who up until now has been appearing primarily in "Thunderbolts"and who got some notoriety as the guy who killed Captain America and set him down in a black ops, behind-the-lines mission that's so ugly and dirty and awful that they'll send the worst guy there is in because they don't care if he gets killed getting the job done. It's a fun adventure that will hopefully give you a little insight into exactly what it is that makes Crossbones tick and makes him cool. It'll also hopefully set him up for things down the pike.

ON SALE IN JULY
Marvel Comics announced today via the New York Daily News and a press release that Steve Rogers will return to the role of Captain America in the comic of the same name this July. Ed Brubaker will continue the series he has been writing since November 2004, and will be joined by Civil War artist Steve McNiven. The move comes intentionally timed to the July 22, 2011 release of Captain America: The First Avenger, the next in a series of blockbuster films set in Marvel's new movie universe, which also features Iron Man and Thor.
Marvel's senior VP of Publishing Tom Brevoort admitted as much to the Daily News, saying that with Rogers in the spotlight, "it would probably not be the worst thing in the world for him to be in the suit and carrying the shield at that point."
Brubaker, meanwhile, notes that while that is definitely an impetus, he's not forgetting about his nearly 7 years of story around the character.
“I gave myself a few challenges for this new #1 - I wanted to do the perfect Cap comic for anyone who walks out of the Cap movie and wants to know what's next, but it also had to build on everything I've done on the book beforehand, too, and feel like the natural next step,"he said in the release.
The fate of Bucky Barnes, the original sidekick to Captain America and current holder of the title, was not revealed in the release. He is currently undergoing a trial for espionage and the crimes he committed in his "Winter Soldier"persona, a brain-washed Soviet Cold War Assassin.
Captain America #1 will debut in July 2011. Full Press Release follows.
Marvel Announces Brubaker &McNiven’s CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
New Ongoing Series Begins In July Featuring Marvel’s First Avenger
New York, NY – April 4, 2011— Marvel Entertainment is proud to announce Captain America #1, the first issue of an all new ongoing series premiering in July from two of the comic industry’s most acclaimed creators—writer Ed Brubaker (Death of Captain America) and artist Steve McNiven (Civil War)!
Steve Rogers is back as Captain America but when a mysterious figure from his past returns with the Sentinel of Liberty in his crosshairs, deadly secrets will surface—and send shockwaves through the lives of everyone Steve holds dear. An all-new, high octane Captain America series begins here, just in time for the First Avenger’s highly anticipated feature film from Marvel Studios.
“I gave myself a few challenges for this new #1 - I wanted to do the perfect Cap comic for anyone who walks out of the Cap movie and wants to know what's next, but it also had to build on everything I've done on the book beforehand, too, and feel like the natural next step,” explained Brubaker. “Thank God Brevoort wrangled me Steve McNiven to pull all this off. Steve is at the top of his game, and no one draws action like him. I can't wait for these issues to start coming out.”
McNiven revealed, “Captain America has been a character I've wanted to work on in more depth since Civil War, a real icon of the Marvel Universe. Not only do I get to run with Cap, but Ed Brubaker, a guy who has redefined the character at Marvel, is writing the books and he's come up with an absolutely brilliant storyline that I can't wait for folks to read.”
Perfect for readers new and old alike, the extra-sized Captain America #1 kicks off the next big chapter in the life of Steve Rogers, courtesy of superstars Ed Brubaker and Steve McNiven!

ON SALE THIS JULY!
Read what's goin on in Captain America itself below, and tell us on Twitter what you think of the news!
So what happens to Bucky? Well, the current Captain America title will become Captain America and Bucky with #620 in July, as announced on Marvel.com. There's a twist though- this book isn't about the present day, it's about the past, the journey that both Steve and Bucky took together (and seperately) to get to where they are today.
The book will be co-written by current Captain America writer Ed Brubaker and Marc Andreyko. Art will go to Thor: The Mighty Avenger artist Chris Samnee. Brubaker says that while the series is set in the past, it "ties directly into what's going on in Captain America and Fear Itself, and sets up future plans for [CLASSIFIED]."
